On Friday, August 15th, the Blót kindred Idavallen once again held blót in honor of Tors MC and its brothers and sisters. About 35 people attended the blot, 4 of whom were members of Idavallen.
On Friday afternoon, representatives of Idavallen gathered at one of my favorite places in Karlstad, Värmland, Dye Domarringar. Among the ancient standing stones we raised our tent and blót table preparing for the coming blót. Here at Dye Domarringar, halfway up a forested hill, stones rise from the ground, a reminder for us who walk here today of those who walked before us. Long ago, a man was buried here together with what we assume was his dog. This final resting place for two individuals must have been of great importance, as those who honored them with this monument put great effort into transporting and raising these stones. We must always remember, preserve, and honor that when we respectfully walk such places today.
Around 6 p.m., as evening approached, joyful voices echoed through the woods. Up the slope came an eager crowd of men and women, many clad in leather vests adorned with patches showing their affiliations. They had gathered from various regions, both within and beyond our realm. What brought them together this weekend was Tors MC, a club that each year holds a great feast at their nearby clubhouse, and with it also a blót in the presence of the powers at this sacred site.
The circle was closed to the beat of the drum and the powers were called in by NBR Thommy Vähäsalo. To connect with the culture held so dear by the participants, the powers were invited in with a “ride”, in this case a metaphor for the two-wheeled beasts the attendees ride along the roads. Toasts were raised to the powers, to family, and to friends. Thommy held a well-written speech, drawing parallels between our gods, our ancestors, and biker culture. It was a very fitting element that tied both faith and fellowship together. I believe it is important to stress that our gods are just as relevant today as in the past. Who we are today may not differ so much from before. The world around us and how we do things may have changed greatly, but who we are and what we desire in our hearts is, I believe, the same as it was then.
As the blót drew to a close, the powers were dismissed. When the circle dissolved, some stayed behind to discuss faith, fellowship, and above all mead. A very successful blót, and I am glad to be part of such moments.
A great thank you and my best wishes to Tors MC.
